Verify the network and mint address, then inspect authorities and extensions before interpreting token metadata.
Names are presentation
A Solana mint account uniquely identifies a token on that network. A ticker, display name and logo are convenient labels, but unrelated tokens can use similar labels. Two wallet rows reading the same symbol need not represent the same asset. Start an investigation with the full mint address obtained from an authoritative project or issuer source, and independently compare it with the token actually held or received.
Decode the quantity
The mint's decimals determine how integer base units are presented to people. With six decimals, an amount of 2,500,000 base units displays as 2.5 tokens. With nine decimals, the same integer displays as 0.0025. This example is about units, not value. A balance error can arise from applying the wrong decimals even when the underlying transfer is correct. Keep raw units and display units clearly labelled when reconciling records.
Authorities describe capabilities
A mint authority can create additional units when present under the token's rules. A freeze authority can freeze token accounts when that capability is available. Absence of a mint authority can limit further issuance for a standard mint, but it does not prove fair distribution, useful demand or deep liquidity. Other controls and token extensions may still matter. Read capabilities individually instead of awarding a blanket safety verdict from one revoked authority.
Build an identity card
For a token you need to track, record its network, mint address, token program, decimals and authoritative reference link. Note when you checked the relevant authorities and whether you inspected extensions. If a transfer arrives unexpectedly with a familiar logo, do not treat it as the expected payment until the identity matches. Avoid visiting links embedded in unsolicited token metadata. Correct identification is the beginning of due diligence; it does not establish that the asset can be redeemed or sold.
